For this week, Rachel of Confessions of a Tangerine Tart chose Chocolate Whopper Malted Drops. You can find the recipe on her blog, or on page 85 of Dorie’s book, Baking: From My Home to Yours. My husband took these to work and his coworkers devoured them – one very slim young lady ate five. I think she’s a size zero. Sigh.
Believe it or not, I could not find malted milk powder anywhere, and I did not want to buy a huge jar of Ovaltine, because it would sit in my cupboard for years. So, what did I substitute for the malted milk powder, you ask? Ground up malted milk balls! Hooray! And it worked perfectly. I didn’t bother to sift the ground up whoppers along with the other dry ingredients, just added them to the mixture.
After reading some of the other posts, I didn’t cut up the remaining malted milk balls, and just threw them whole into the batter, along with about 2 ounces of bittersweet chocolate (I didn’t add the full amount because I’m already on sugar overload).
The end result? A chocolaty, caramely, soft and chewy cookie. The malted milk balls just melted into the batter, leaving toffee-like pockets in the cookies. Boy, are these RICH. Next week, however, Claudia of Fool for Food has picked Chocolate Chunkers, my favorite Dorie cookie recipe of all the ones I’ve tried so far. When I give those away, they go only to my most favorite people!

You used them whole?! How was that? I cut mine in half and they remained visible and bite-able, but it didn’t occur to me to leave them whole.
Send more cookies to that size zero girl. She obviously needs to eat!
I almost left my whoppers whole…almost.
how resourceful that you used ground up candy for the powder! I agree with Lori, send that size zero chicky some cookies (and a sandwich)! Have a great rest of the week.
Those little pockets of caramelized Whoppers were my favorite part. Great looking cookies as always!
That sounds so good! I’m definitely going to have to try the whole Whoppers next time. Yum!
Oh, I was thinking about skipping out on another cookie week, but you’re selling me on the Chocolate Chunkers. Are they really that good?
I have noticed that the people in offices who eat the most are the tiniest. I am not sure what the science is behind that but it is not at all fair.
Your cookies look great, I did buy the whole jar of Ovaltine so if you want to make more – stop by and help yourself!
ps, your eclairs look great – I like the tops, and the ice cream idea.
i would never have thought of using the actual candies in place of the malted milk powder. maybe i would have liked them better. your look sooo yummy.
They really ARE rich, aren’t they? From your description, I am really looking forward to next week’s cookies (for once I haven’t baked the challenges weeks in advance).
Great idea to grind up the whoppers. I didn’t use as much chocolate or even whoppers as it called for.
Great Whopper idea! Sigh….I wish I was a size 0!!!
I didn’t chop the Whoppers either, and I didn’t realize I had done it “wrong” until this very moment. I think you’ll agree that the cookies with full-sized Whoppers were a…whopping success.
I used full Whoppers, too, and it was awesome. I didn’t even know it was “wrong” until now.
That was a great idea to ground up the balls. I didn’t feel like buying an entire jar of ovaltine either so I got some from my grandmother’s. Your cookies look really chewy!
The reason I can’t be a size 5? I can’t leave all this good food alone! I totally envy people like your hubby’s skinny co-worker.
Nice sub, and some awesome looking cookies.
I wish I had done my whoppers whole! Great job! They look delicious!
I should have used whole whoppers. I chopped mine to fine and they melted in the cookies. Looks delicious!
Dontcha just wanna hate those size-0 girls! LOL Maybe I shoulda left my Whoppers whole too. Great job!
Have a delicious day 🙂
What a great idea to grind up Whoppers. My nephew doesn’t know it, but he’s getting a little used jar of Ovaltine! 🙂 Your cookies look great!
Great idea to use more Whoppers. I bet it gave it a great taste!
My daughter loves Ovaltine, so we always have a jar in the pantry. But, she’s back at college now, so I could dip into her stash for these cookies and hear no complaints. Too bad she missed out on the cookies!
Yours look great! Glad you enjoyed them!
Well done on a genius substitution!
thanks for the comment you made on my blog! i LOVE your page. everything looks so great!
Your sub was a great idea! I know I’m not the first to tell you that, but I wanted to share it anyway. Your cookies look great.
“one very slim young lady ate five. I think she’s a size zero. Sigh.” HAHAHAHA. Awesome.
I did not post mine – cookies did not look good, tasted ok though. I ended up buying a medium sized ovaltine…
I hate skinny people who can eat five cookies!!! So jealous! Your cookies look great!
Ha! Ground up Whoppers! How resourceful! I would have bought the Ovaltine and ate straight out of the jar (not a good thing). Your idea is wonderful 🙂
